January 2014: Construction Update

In mid-December George Iyoob, MHA, BSN, RN was named as the new Clinical Director of Trauma and Orthopedics for PPMC. In this role, he will be instrumental in shepherding the transition of the Trauma program from HUP to PPMC in 2015. George started his nursing career at Penn Medicine in 1989 as a Registered Nurse on the Orthopedic/Trauma General Care Unit at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). For the past ten years George has served in the role of Nurse Manager for the Surgical/Trauma Intensive Care Unit at HUP.

Around the same time, the names for both the inpatient pavilion expansion and the ambulatory care building were finalized. Moving forward the inpatient pavilion expansion adjacent to Cupp/Myrin Pavilion and 38th & Powleton will be known as the PAVILION FOR ADVANCED CARE (PAC). The Ambulatory Care building at 3737 Market Street, which had a planning name as the Penn Center for Specialty Care will now be known as PENN MEDICINE UNIVERSITY CITY.

Pavilion for Advanced Care (PAC) Construction Update

Davita Dialysis Relocation and Medical Imaging MRI Suite Construction
The Cupp 1st floor Davita Dialysis Center began moving the weekend of January 11th and saw their first patient in the Ralston Life Building building, located at 39th and Filbert streets, on January 13th. This new facility is a first class dialysis center with 27 chairs and an isolation room. The space that Davita occupied will house the future location of the new MRI Medical Imaging suite. The construction of the MRI suite is anticipated to proceed through the spring with the new suites opening in July 2014.

Emergency Department Triage and Registration Renovation
The first phase of renovation to the Emergency Department began January 22nd. The construction closes half of the patient lobby and registration desks to make way for a new triage and reception space in the Emergency Department. During this phase ambulance stretcher access will be through the doors on Powelton as the previous side entrance will be closed. Patient registration will be mobile and triage has a temporary location. A second phase of construction is anticipated in 90 days to complete the other half of the space and will be completed by July 2014.

Powelton Food Truck relocation
The food trucks that are currently located on Powelton avenue just outside of Myrin will be shifted one block to accomodate the new entrance to the Emergency Department. The new location is just a few yards down the block on Powleton, just outside of Wright Saunders and the Security Office.

OR Impacts and Bridge Tie–in
The OR Suite was impacted with a closure earlier this month to install steel that will support the bridge connecting the new Pavilion to Cupp.

Check out the construction progress on Penn Medicine University City

If you've stopped by 38th and Market lately, you've seen that the exterior of the Penn Medicine University City building looks like it's in the home stretch. In fact, the steel topping out is scheduled for January 24th, weather permitting. The interior is coming along just as well in the 13 story building. Concrete has been poured oup to the 12th floor; the stud walls are framed up through the 6th floor, with drywall up through the 3rd. There will be a mock up Exam Room completed by February.
